Active Characters

Active Characters
I can't believe I'm going to blog about Survivor, today. But I am. And how does this classic reality TV show relate to writing?

Well, on pondering the outcome of the finale on Sunday night, I decided it was a perfect example of why we popular fiction authors write proactive protagonists.

For those of you not addicted to this show, (that I swore I would NEVER watch when I first heard the premise, but find more addictive than crack -- not that I've tried crack, just saying), the final two contestants were Amanda and Pavarti. Two very pretty girls who'd both been contestants on previous seasons and were part of the original "favorites" tribe.

I read a few blogs about the outcome and I think it's fair to say that most fans of the show expected Amanda to win. The final winner is based on a vote of the last 8 people voted off the show before them, and so it's expected that the players who have done the most backstabbing will lose, because the "jury" is raw from just being turfed off and often want revenge. That's the way this show normally goes -- the most liked player generally wins at the end -- and so the contestant who gets the power to choose who to take to that final vote with them, typically takes someone the others don't like, and that's what Amanda did in picking Pavarti. Pavarti had flirted with a bunch of the jury members -- men and women -- she'd lied to just about everyone, and she'd staged a coup against one of the most popular and powerful players, Ozzie, who was so angry he wouldn't even let her talk that night.

Now Amanda, in my mind, was no angel in the game. In her "confessional" interviews, (when it's just her and the camera), I thought it was pretty clear that she had a strategy and was pretty smart about the game and pretty smart about who to trust and who not to trust and how to keep people trusting her. She was good at the game.

BUT... In the final tribal council she made a huge mistake. She decided to play the innocence card. She sat there with her big brown eyes wide open and told people how trustworthy she'd been. How she'd been lucky to be in the right alliance. How she'd only lied to people she believed had lied to her. How she'd been really loyal to the people she'd given her word to.

While Pavarti took the opposite tack. She owned up to all her devious actions and, in fact, took more credit for the powerful "women's alliance" forming than I thought she deserved. I know we only see what the producers/editors want us to see, but it seemed to me that Cirie and Amanda were both pretty big players in orchestrating the amazing blindsides these girls pulled off. But Pavarti took the credit/blame. Even as everyone they'd tricked was spitting venom at her, she just sat there, didn't get defensive, and said, "Yes, I did it. I fooled and tricked you all."

And it worked. In spite of everyone saying how much they hated her, the majority of them voted for her to win the million.

Why? I think it was at least in part because Amanda cast herself as the passive character. The one who sits back and lets things happen to her. This let Pavarti take clear hold of the active role. The one who makes things happen.

And the cast, the jury, the people voting, didn't see what we'd seen at home. They hadn't heard Amanda scheming behind their backs as we had. They hadn't seen her taking action. (Except maybe with Erik, but that was so funny, no one except Erik would hold it against her.) So, they believed that Amanda had been passive most of the game and gliding along on the Pavarti ride. And they went with the woman of action.

And I took that as a good lesson for why readers like active characters.

See? It ties in.

Post Script (that I could probably fit in above if I weren't too lazy to do some editing, but I really must get back to my manuscript...)

This outcome was also a lesson about not letting your protagonist cry. I think Amanda's tears, that many took as false the night she chose Pavarti over Cirie, really worked against her. Fresh from seeing her acting job in tricking Erik, many questioned the sincerity of her tears, plus they made her seem weak. Now, I'm a big crier myself, but readers don't generally like their main characters to cry. Just saying.

The Importance Of Feminism To Liberalism

The Importance Of Feminism To Liberalism
This is one of my pet topics that I don't actually write about much, because I feel like a broken record, but today I think the topic needs to be refreshed a little. Hugo Schwyzer linked to this nauseating jerk-off of an editorial that was supposed to be "satirical" but was pretty much just the writer, Michael Lewis, bragging about how he talked a smart, beautiful woman (Tabitha Soren) into giving up her career in order to be just the Missus. Believe me, those men who don't see a big problem with that kind of ego-stroking, if I wrote an an article bragging about how I found a man to give up fame and fortune in order to stay and home and look after my children, you'd be pissed, too.

Anyway, Hugo left this comment about his views on marriage and staying at home to raise children:

"I'll catch some flak for this, but in my opinion one of the greatest gifts a husband can give his wife is the freedom to choose to what degree she wishes to remain in the public sphere after they've had children."

Meaning that men should be gracious if their wives want to keep their jobs but willing to shoulder the financial burden should their wives want to stay at home. I told him he was being classist in the comments, and I was right. Most men don't have an opportunity to be the big champion for "letting" their wives work or the big supporter for "letting" their wives stay at home; most married couples need two incomes to get by, so the whole subject is irrelevant to their personal circumstances.

The problem with comments like this is that men in this country are already oppressed by the American Dream, the male version, at least. As far as I know, there's no female-centered version of the American Dream. In the American Dream, our hero Ward Cleaver is a Real Man because he has a job that pays for him to have a big house, a family and a most importantly, a wife who is financially dependent on him and under his direct control. This is how masculinity is defined for so many, many men in our country. The problem is that fulfilling that dream of having a woman sequestered away at home tending to you and your children is that it's out of the financial reach of the majority of men.

Of course, what this means is that we have a huge population of men in this country that both believe that in order to be Real Men they have to have a wife that is both at home and subservient, but out of financial necessity, they have wives who work. And it's hard to get subservience out of someone when you can't tell them, "Well, who makes the money around here?" There's a lot of resentment there.

In step the Republicans, who can't give these guys what they really want--jobs that pay enough to have a family with one income--but they can give them an endless list of people to scapegoat: welfare moms, illegal immigrants, disobedient women getting abortions, gays who want marriage when you can't even have the Leave It to Beaver one you wanted for yourself, and so on and so forth. Plus, the President is all too willing to be a walking phallic symbol for all sorts of masculine fantasies of power to be projected on. Maybe you can't be Ward Cleaver, conservative men of America, but at least you can pretend you're Dirty Harry.

I see some pontificators who have toyed with the idea of "compromising" with the Resentful Male Republicans by kicking feminists around a little, I mean, "compromising" on women's right to an abortion, etc. This strategy isn't going to work. Every attempt to assuage those who vote from anxious masculinity is just going to be topped by the Republicans, who I have no doubt would go so far as to strap a codpiece on President Bush and parade him around riding on the back of a woman on all fours, especially if they could do it out of sight of the female voters they are trying to lure by saying "children" a lot.

Gender issues are not of secondary importance to conservative politics at all--they are front and center. Ultimately, the resentful NASCAR dad voters are voting for a return to unquestioned straight male dominance. And when liberals ghettoize "women's issues" or suggest that they can compromise with the right-wing on what rights to "let" women have, it reinforces the belief that male dominance is the way of the world, and thereby weakens the liberal position.

There's been a lot of ink spilled as of late bemoaning the lack of direction and lack of goals for progressives. This sort of thing really perplexes those of us who concentrate on feminist progressivism--I have no problem whatsoever stating what my direction and goals are for feminism. Feminists want full legal equality for women, parity between the sexes in every aspect of public life, social relationships between men and women based on equality, the rights of children to be acknowledged and respected, the right of women to use every tool science has to offer to maintain control over our bodies, wage equity, social policies to help parents, and healthy social attitudes towards sexuality. We also have tons of plans and ideas that we'd like to implement. You want goals and ideas? Feminists got 'em.

Liberal Democrats need to enthusiastically embrace feminism, and have the courage of our convictions. Courage is what attracts voters--if you don't think that's so, then look at all the women who vote against their own interests because they are lured by the confident way conservatives put the boot to the neck. Oh yeah, and in case we forgot, women are half the voters out there, but women voters are wishy-washy about supporting the Democratic party. Why? Well, because the Democrats are wishy-washy about standing up for what women want. Enthusiastic support for women's rights and women's needs is the best way to get the attention and support of women voters. I cannot tell you how many women I know who express feminist opinions and vote for the Republicans. They would probably be more inclined to rethink their choice if they saw the Democrats outlining programs that woudl be of a direct benefit to them.

Single Over 50 Meet Women On Line And Find True Love

Single Over 50 Meet Women On Line And Find True Love
As we have approached the 21st century, we find there is less time, and more pressure. As we rely more heavily on technology, we often take it for granted and use it as a means for social interaction, as well as work. The question is, how to date and meet women online?

The key to meeting women online is to find those that have similar interests to you. Most men are attracted to women who share similar interests, and as you are unable to talk to the person face to face, you want to be able to share something in common with them. It is important to find common interests so when you finally meet in person, it can be easier for you to continue the conversation.

The key is to find those already niched websites where women are in a similar age bracket and have signed up with the same interests as your own. Having similar hobbies could keep your online conversation going for hours.

Want To Put An End To Fights In Your Relationship Or Marriage This Will Help

Want To Put An End To Fights In Your Relationship Or Marriage This Will Help
A progress report from a female reader proves yet again that personal authority and leadership get results in your relationship and marriage.I got a letter from an old and dear friend that I want to share with you. She's not what anyone could call a pessimist or skeptic, just a woman with a logical mind who needs to see proof in her own life before anything can progress from "theory" to "fact" in her own mind. Meet Halle:David,Okay, so I've been reading your newsletter for a while now, and of course, I've read your book, but I still wasn't 100% buying into some of your "theories" (don't spank me, you know how I am about this stuff!)... but my current relationship is slowly but surely striking down each and every one of my "objections." I wanted to tell you about the most recent one.I've been dating this guy for about 4 months... we have progressed VERY slowly due to a combination of work schedules (both very busy) and our combined set of "baggage," which, although small enough to fit neatly in the overhead compartment or underneath the seats in front of us, is still sufficient to cause us each to slam on the brakes every now and then. So after 4 months, we've JUST had our first "argument."It wasn't a particularly bad one by any stretch of the imagination, but due to the late (or rather, EARLY hour - it was about 3 AM), it did go downhill towards the end. I was having a very hard time articulating what I was trying to say, which resulted in several long, uncomfortable silences -- never a good thing when you're having a discussion in a dark room at 3 AM. At one point, I got upset because he was nodding off, so I got up and went into the bathroom.Actually, to be honest, I probably did more of a "storm" into the bathroom - and closed the door loudly so that he would hear it. He did hear the door close, which jarred him out of his nodding off, and he yelled through the door, "Do NOT get up and walk out on this conversation. If you've got something to say, SAY IT. It's late and I'm tired, so let's get this settled and MOVE ON!" Now, my first reaction was to think, "How DARE he talk to me like that? Who does he think he is? Talking to me like I'm a bratty little kid and he's my father... the NERVE!"But the truth is... I WAS being bratty. It took about 7 seconds for me to realize that, and his tone of voice was what did it. In theory, I would have told you that an authoritative attitude would NOT have worked to snap me out of any negative behavior patterns... it sounds like something that just wouldn't work for me. In theory, I would have told you that kind of tone of voice and those words would have hurt my feelings or made me cry... or just made me mad... but it didn't.That one statement was all it took to straighten my ass out! :-) The fact is, I was subconsciously testing him to see what I could get away with, and to see if he was man enough to stand up to me and pull me back in line. I think he's the first man in my life who's ever talked to me that way... and he's probably the first REAL man that I've ever been in love with. It should be interesting to see where this relationship goes...Thanks for your advice and your perspective -- I continue to be amazed at how RIGHT you are! :-)HalleMy response:Well, Sweetie, I thought you knew me better than to think I would indulge in anything that was merely a theory. That would amount to selling people the privilege of testing my theories in my book, which I would call "theft by fraud," among other things.I wasn't kidding about the 118 couples who helped in the research for my book, nor was I theorizing about anything that is in it. That's the result of working with all those couples and quite a few more after the first edition, and one of the first things that became immediately obvious in doing so was that what women think and say they want and what they respond to are quite often very different, and even opposite, like wanting a "nice guy."In any case, I'm glad it's helping. It will help a lot more if you just accept what you read in that book and seek understanding, benefit, and protection from your vulnerabilities through it. I'm not saying, "Trust me." I'm saying, "It's been proven beyond any reasonable doubt through application on a significant scale." You'll find it quite empowering to be able to prepare for the unexpected and dispatch most if not all of those secret fears that every woman is programmed to have throughout her life, which is the main reason I wanted you to have it.Take care, and keep in touch,DavidYou see, Gentlemen, what I keep telling you isn't theory at all. It's the result of studying and interviewing real people with real problems and making adjustments that brought real successes in their relationships. Some people are good at visionary things, like inventing or composing. Others are good at organizing things. Still others are good at following instructions and consistently producing a quality result. I'm good at studying cause and effect and developing operational models, policies, procedures, and at using these things to understand, manage, and eliminate crisis, not to mention PREVENT it.That's how "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage" came to be. My relationship with my wife was cooling after a couple of years, and I had a lot of friends whose relationships were somewhere between "strained" and divorce court. I started researching, found a lot of good information (by filtering through and trying a lot of BAD information!) that was making fast improvements in my own relationship, and knew that it was so universal in nature that if it could work for me it could probably work for a lot of other people.I contacted my troubled friends and invited them to participate in a study and to contact their own friends with problem relationships and invite them in as well. After working with 188 women, we ended up with 118 couples, plus my own relationship, and all of us found major improvements, literally returning to honeymoon status: being fully engaged instead of going our separate ways after dinner, indulging in romance regularly, holding hands when we walked somewhere, talking about anything and everything with renewed interest, and returning to a satisfying sex-life after having slipped into that "the average couple has sex six times per year" status. That was over a decade ago. After working with a lot of couples, I was finally convinced to open a forum, where we continue to discover and refine, and where people with problems get help cutting through the emotions that cloud their judgment and identifying, facing, and working within the factual basis of their problems to quickly reach a solution. No believing, no hoping, no listening to somebody else grind their axe in an attempt to justify their own bad choices or blind leading the blind. Just knowing, doing, and making friends along the way. You're most welcome to join us at http://forum.makingherhappy.com.The best news of all is that the key to much of what makes a relationship or marriage work is for a man to start aspiring - or resuming -- to be a man instead of apologizing for being one. Can you remember how much fun it is to just be a guy? Can you even remember back that far? Were men still acting like men when you came into adulthood, or did you grow up in the age of political correctness and men crying in front of their women because some idiot who had a pocketful of opinions and theories and not a shred of credible proof if any of them had told them that's what women want?Women want men, real men, manly men who do manly things. Not thugs, not predators or parasites, and although you couldn't convince some women of it until they'd tried it, not metrosexuals, either, because they end up being girlfriends to shop with instead of men. They want a real man with a real purpose and a real smile, who can protect them from their worst enemy, boredom. They want more than that, but you're going to have to go to http://www.makingherhappy.com and get your copy of "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage" to find out exactly what that is and how to make it happen. You'd better do it now, because every day that passes is another day that you get to spend either happy or unhappy, and you don't have any idea how many you have left. Neither do I, but even if it were millions more, I'd much prefer to spend them in a great relationship than in misery wishing I could have my great relationship back.In the meantime, live well, be well, and have a wonderful day!David Cunningham"Being a man is something to which one should aspire, not something for which he should apologize." --David Cunningham

Among the thrift tanking and painful slips becoming an common confetti in cities spanning America, it's no astound that many creators are mining the intensity departure of the American prospect for open intensity.

About his career, writer/executive producer Dmitry Lipkin has succeeded at presentation the dismal side of that prospect. In his short-lived (albeit radically missed) FX succession The Reserves, Lipkin used a family of Travelers, the on its last legs objector society outsiders, as a pitch for exploring just what acquisitiveness and suburban additions doomed to the psychic outlook.

In Hung, the new HBO succession Lipkin co-created with Colette Burstein, the in use of the American prospect looms large. This time, the focus is on Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane), a down-on-his-luck Michigan basketball coach/high studious history teacher whose life is without favoritism falling down on all sides of him. Excessively for a tiresome, underpaid job at his high studious alma mater (where he returned after an injury sidelined his pro sports career), Ray has got a shrew of an ex-wife to display with (Anne Heche), two grouchy teenagers (Charlie Saxton and Sianoa Smit-McPhee), and his lakeside family home catches fire in the mind of the night, momentary the family snooty or less cast out.

I had the be revealed former week to watch the first four episodes of Hung (the first of which is directed by Alexander Payne) and was struck by the helix of depression that Ray finds himself in as he circles the drain, a situation that accompanies the culmination that his life hasn't amounted to its full intensity. It's a route that leads him to first to a self-help tell overseen by the oily Floyd Gerber (Seinfeld's Steve Hytner) and later into the bed of local poet Tanya Skagle (Jane Adams), a frizzy-haired free spirit with a prospect of initiation Lyric Bread, a line of arid leverage with works of verbal skill arid right in.

That these two aren't exchangeable quixotically is a resolution. Ray is a fallen blonde boy with an ego as big as his, well, physical endowment; Tanya is a resolute objector woman in touch with her sexuality whose dreams hold squarely out of knock. Her idea for Lyric Bread is so academic and just plain out of touch with reality but that hasn't stopped Tanya from dreaming big. Acceptable as The Reserves establish humor and pathos in the position setting, about too does Hung, setting daydreamer Tanya as a legal scope temp, a say copyproofing considerable contracts in a neverending routine of perform.

That these two would suite to form a bungalow and set up shop as a prostitute and a pimp is one of the earliest patch points of Hung's pilot part, even if it takes a while for the duo to come to this closing, as unoriginal as it is to the rest of us. Which is one of the problems with Hung as a whole: the patch twists are so discrete that they can be seen a mile down the footsteps.

It's eager from the very indication that Ray will accept to use his member as his most mercantile "tool," and being he shocks the seminar's attendees by stating this fact, I cheered for the chilly disorder of the situation. But that's the problem: the following catch sight of unfolds unbendingly inside Ray's a story and not reality, where he spins a filament about being a vintage car aficionada. And yet I couldn't help but marvel why Lipkin and Co. didn't go all out and for practical purposes accept that conversation expand first than play it out in Ray's mind. I pleasing to see his classmates reactions, their looks of stun and severity and possibly pleasurable. I pleasing Ray for once to be honest.

This gaffe is one of the succession downfalls. I kept back hopeful for some pathos-laden humor to hind its initial, but Hung plays it safe in snooty ways than one. Ray is open as fresh snooty than a sad-sack to the point that it's hard to instigate for him being whatever thing he does (whether setting up a tent in the patch to urinating in the bring together) drags him further down. His journey neediness be side-splitting (in a trainwreck sort of way) but it's repeatedly open pleasantly understatedly.

In the same way, one can't help but filch, resolution the succession title and its send on pay row, that Hung is departure to be pleasantly arson but it's for practical purposes somewhat a safe program as a total. Specialized Ray's physical, uh, form and his new line of work, one may well make certain that this may well prod the wrap, even for HBO but the end is plaza compliant, even by basic row ethics.

I couldn't help but stance Aaron Eckhart in Thomas Jane's role and wondered just what he would be able to do with this stance of disturb femininity. Unruffled, Jane brings a calm power to Ray that's at option with his bruised and eroded ego, a lived-in quality that shows the signs of too many battles with ex-wife Jessica (Heche) and too radically worry stemming from his maladjusted offspring. As Tanya, Adams gives the poet-turned-temp the wide-eyed glimmer of comfort that enduring optimists accept even at the decisive of times, junction Tanya from a human punching bag (witness her relationship with Rebecca Creskoff's insane Lenore) into the animation, energetic quintessence of blocked intensity, making her a relationships spirit with Ray.

Unruffled, in any case a slow indication and a defined lack of humor, Hung does show some scale improvements by the third or fourth part, where Jane's Ray and Adams' Tanya communicate some emotional--rather than physical--intimacy (witness Tanya's make use of of a disoriented file) and Ray before I go embraces his new prozzie gig, seeing the take pleasure in of Tanya's viral marketing, its female-friendly positioning as Jollity Consultants, and the service he's giving out to some sex-starved women. The junction point comes a fresh too in a minute as Ray before I go fulfills his classification with an preceding married woman (The Reserves augur Margo Martindale); he's a fresh too simplified, a fresh too figure following his presentiment (and possible psychosomatic awareness to meeting his customer in the flesh).

That alleged, there's still a sweetness to the minuscule where Ray realizes that these women--average housewives that they are--may be just as frustrated as he is. Nonetheless having country and redress, they are just as unhappy with how their lives turned out as Ray is and possibly he is generous them snooty than just sex. Possibly he's generous them a prospect.

Who Do You Love

Who Do You Love
Question from a reader, my answers are in bold:I broke up with my boyfriend a few days ago because after many lies I became suspicious and logged on to a few of his accounts and found out that he had also been cheating. This man told me he loved me within 3-4 weeks of meeting me. Has constantly told me how beautiful and sexy I was. Had a sex drive that was incredible. We could have sex several times a day and he would still masturbate. He could have orgasms one after the other up to 4 in a row. During all of this he was seeing another woman who he had started an affair with prior to me once a week at lunch. He wanted me to have his baby, wanted to move in with me. Said I could stay home with the child and not work. Everythink that I wanted he swore he wanted too. A little farm in the country, yes, organic food, yes. He knew my ex had pushed me to have an abortion so he was going to have his vasectomy reversed so that we could have a child together. THIS IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF HOW SOCIOPATHS ARE SO INHERENTLY FLEXIBLE. THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO BECOME WHATEVER THEY WANT. WHATEVER YOU WANT, IF YOU STRIKE THEIR FANCY. I MEAN, REALLY, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF THIS MAN WANTING A FARM IN THE COUNTRY, ORGANIC FOOD, ETC.? CLEARLY A SOCIOPATH. All of this while lying constantly, texting other women on a regular basis, having a long term affair with another. He is a heavy pot smoker, heavy drinker. He believes he is very intelligent. The things that make me question whether he was a sociopath are that he was in the navy for 8 years. THE MILITARY WOULD BE A GOOD "LEGITIMATE" OUTLET FOR HIS DESTRUCTIVE, THRILL-SEEKING WAYS, AND POWER-SEEKING BEHAVIOR. HE PROBABLY DIDN'T MIND TAKING ORDERS FROM ONE PERSON AS LONG AS HE KNEW HE COULD LORD IT OVER ANOTHER LARGER GROUP. Married for 10 but she left him because of his constant lying, pot addiction and bursts of anger. She said it was like dealing with Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. He has a great job now that he has had for several years and seems to be fairly conscientious about it. He screws off a lot but he has a lot of responsiblity and seems to take it seriously when necessary. YEAH, HIGH-FUNCTIONING SOCIOPATHS DO THIS. THEY HAVE A CONCEPT OF NOT DEFECATING WHERE THEY EAT. THEY WILL KEEP CERTAIN THINGS STABLE IN THEIR LIFE AND FIND OUTLETS FOR THEIR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR IN WAYS THAT ARE LESS LIKELY TO BACKFIRE ON THEM. After breaking up with him he denied for several days even though I had written proof and then went from being angry and mean to begging me to give him another chance from one hour to the next. He swears that his D day for being the man that I deserved was when he was moving in (just a few after I caught him) but I assume it is all just more lies. I MEAN, WHAT IS A LIE REALLY? SOUNDS LIKE HE WANTS YOU IN HIS LIFE, JUST MAYBE NOT ON TERMS THAT YOU WOULD PREFER. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HEAR FROM HIM? THAT HE IS DEDICATED TO YOU IN HIS WAY? SOUNDS LIKE HE IS. THAT HE CAN BE DEDICATED TO YOU IN A WAY THAT NORMAL PEOPLE CAN? SOUNDS LIKE HE CAN'T. WHAT ROLE DOES HONESTY HAVE WHEN YOU ARE ASKING HIM TO BE SOMEONE HE IS NOT OR ELSE YOU WILL TAKE AWAY SOMETHING VERY VALUABLE TO HIM. WOULDN'T WE ALL "LIE" TO PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING? EVEN IF JUST TO OURSELVES? DID YOU EVER LIE TO YOURSELF IN THE RELATIONSHIP?Does that sound like a Sociopath or is there something closely related that has more bearing? SOCIOPATH, ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE GIVEN ME JUST A HANDFUL OF CHOICE FACTS. WHO KNOWS WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN HIS MIND. It really shouldn't matter but for some stupid reason if it is based on an actual condition maybe I don't have to feel like such an idiot for buying into what he was selling. WERE YOU AN IDIOT? AM I AN IDIOT IF I WATCH AN INANE BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE AND GET A FEW LAUGHS? MAYBE YOU WERE JUST ENJOYING YOURSELF. AT LEAST THE SEX, RIGHT? He made me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world and swore I made him a better man but his actions were so the opposite. SEE, WHY WOULD YOU GO QUESTIONING THE FACT THAT YOU ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN THE WORLD. CAN'T HE THINK THAT AND BEHAVE AS HE DID? IF HE IS A SOCIOPATH HE CAN. IS HIS BEHAVIOR REALLY SO INCONSISTENT? I MEAN, POLYAMORY IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT IT'S NOT SO OUT THERE. I'M JUST SAYING, DOES IT MATTER MORE TO YOU HOW HE FEELS ABOUT YOU AND HOW HE TREATS YOU? OR WHAT HE DOES WHEN YOU ARE NOT AROUND? DOES HE HAVE TO BE HIS "REAL" SELF ALL THE TIME? AND IF HE WAS, WOULD YOU EVEN LIKE HIM STILL? I am self diagnosing him but I thought I would look for a little feedback.Thanks.

Cute Or Cruel The Fine Line Between Play And Abuse In Relationships And Marriage

Cute Or Cruel The Fine Line Between Play And Abuse In Relationships And Marriage
One of the easiest ways to learn how to do something right, including creating attraction, is to model the behavior of someone who is already skilled. However, you still have to know enough about the process to know whether the behavior you are thinking about modeling is the right behavior to model.

I hope you are enjoying this day as much as I am. In the July 13, 2011 edition of this newsletter (http://forum.makingherhappy.com/showthread.php/770-Pleasure-or-Pain-More-on-Horseplay-and-quot-Picking-quot-in-Relationships-and-Marriage), I wrote to you about playing with women, and how many of the things we do with each other as men to bond and help each other develop "a thicker skin" are perceived differently by women, cruel in fact, because they use the same behavior to attack each other and therefore misconstrue some of our joking as an attack as well.

This is obviously not well-received by a woman from a man who tells her that he loves her. That lesson inspired the following letter from Nina, who notes the difference between ignorance and abuse (and yes, there are valuable lessons here for those of you whose relationships don't involve abuse, so please stick with me here and you'll see what I mean):

Hi David,

My husband and I have been reading your newsletters since we started having trouble last summer, and your book has made a world of difference in our life. We were in a bit of a death spiral, bored and frustrated with each other and had begun picking and sniping at each other in retaliation against what we both thought were deliberate attacks and disrespect, and I need to thank you for helping us get that all sorted out.

He's back to being the man I married, and I feel better about our marriage and my life now than I've ever felt, because Karl never bores me anymore. He's fun and playful one minute and strong and decisive the next, and in spite of his growing "spare tire" around his middle and his receding hairline, he keeps me in the clouds, if you know what I mean. And by the way, thanks so much for teaching him about the value of anticipation and taking it slow. We're both enjoying that part of our life more than we did during our dating and honeymoon periods combined.

I wanted to tell you about something I saw today, and have been seeing since our new neighbors moved in. I didn't realize what I was really seeing until your newsletter about how men and women play differently. I thought that this was what our neighbor Gene was doing to his wife Carrie, but I think I was wrong. Every time we're over there, no matter who is around or how Carrie really looks (she's usually very slender and fit but sometimes she puts on a couple of extra pounds when she has to work late a lot at the hospital here), he'll walk up and say to her, "You're looking pretty chunky in those shorts (or pants or whatever). We're going to have to get that weight off of you!" And then he'll swat her on her bottom or pinch her or grab her and pull her skin to make love handles. It embarrasses her so badly that she'll start crying and walk away, and he just laughs.

I thought for a long time that he was really that stupid and insensitive, but I've noticed other things lately. She never leaves the house without him, and very often when we're all together and she's asked a question, she'll look at him before answering, and won't answer until he makes eye contact with her and twitches some part of his face. I've never seen him hit her, and haven't seen any bruises, but I think he's controlling and abusing her, because she never looks happy and often the only way I can describe the way she looks is "trapped." Is there anything that I can say to her or do for her to help her through this?

Thank you so much for your help, and for listening,

Nina

My reply:

Hi Nina,

I'm so happy to hear that you and your husband have had such success, and I'm equally sorry to hear that your neighbor is having such trouble. There is nothing to help her through, except exiting the relationship, unless she wants to risk going to jail by cracking him in the head with an iron skillet next time he abuses her, and the best that can do is give her relief, not a good marriage. A good marriage can't be had with an abuser.

Seriously, this is probably out of your league and hers. She needs some professional help to help her understand that she doesn't have to tolerate his abuse and should in fact give him an ultimatum to either stop or leave, and that's obviously not something that can be successfully handled by e-mail or phone, so she needs to find a local counselor.

What you can do for her is to point out to her that her accepting his behavior is self-destructive and unnecessary, that his behavior is controlling and abusive and not the "norm" for male behavior, and that if she is uncomfortable facing him down herself that she should get counseling from someone who specializes in abuse cases and start getting the problem handled. But be warned, she may try to suck you into her problems, or begrudge you sticking your nose into her marriage, and getting involved in your neighbor's domestic disputes and relationship problems can land you in all sorts of trouble, including emotionally draining you to the point of damaging your relationship with your husband or causing a feud with your neighbor, so don't let that happen.

Take care, and keep in touch,

David

What can the rest of us learn from this situation? First, some women are just as capable and skilled at this kind of controlling, demoralizing behavior as men; indeed, some of them are even better at it than we are. They may not even make a pretense of playing with you; they may just attack you outright in public, airing your dirty laundry, discussing your mistakes and failures, describing in detail your embarrassing moments, complaining about things you do, etc.

But not every attack is abuse. Pay close attention here so you can learn to distinguish between a desperate plea for negotiation and abuse...

When a woman does this infrequently and it's limited to a single issue, like some on-going disagreement that you're having, it's a sign that the two of you are having a communication problem on that issue, she's frustrated, and thinking that she may get you to work harder to listen to her if she gives you a dose of embarrassment and frustration as punishment. Not the best solution in the world for sure, but malice, control, and abuse are not the motivation behind the problem. She's merely getting desperate for communication and trying to bully you a bit to get it and punishing you for making it rough for her. HOWEVER...

If the attacks are frequent, and not related to problems, but to things that destroy self-esteem, like overtly trying to embarrass you over your receding hairline or recent weight gain, being passed over for promotion at work, etc., hitting hot buttons that have nothing to do with anything in dispute and especially target your manhood and independence, you have a spouse abuser on your hands, seeking to control you and keep you close to home by destroying your self-esteem and making you seek their approval.

On the issue of abuse, we have it just a little easier than most women. Most of us don't generally have to worry about our wife beating us to a pulp and putting us in the hospital. But that's about the only advantage. They can still hurt us financially in any number of ways, including burying us in debt and keeping us there, relentlessly putting us down in front of people to the point that we withdraw from the outside world to keep from being embarrassed in front of anybody we know, acting seductive toward other men in our presence or even bringing them home, and in extreme cases, even mixing things like mild poisons, things we're allergic to (peanuts, shell fish, etc.) in our food in just high enough a concentration to make us miserable without endangering us. Abusers, male and female alike, don't want their victim dead, they want them utterly submissive, alive and healthy enough to fully experience the abuse.

If you are with such a person, you can leave or throw them out. There may not be any criminal charges to file, and life may be a bit rough for a little while as you get used to being on your own again, but the truth is that no matter how insecure your abuser makes you feel, you don't have to take it, and there are others in the world who will treat you with love and respect. It may take you awhile to heal and regain both your self-respect and your ability to trust women again, but you can do it, and I and thousands of others are capable of helping you through it, so you don't have to do it alone, either.

Being well-matched is one of the cornerstones of a great relationship, and something I devote a lot of time and energy to explaining and helping you to understand in "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage," and being strapped to an abuser for the rest of your life is definitely NOT what anyone except possibly a masochist would call "being well-matched."

Getting away from an abuser (and that includes predators who use attacks on your self-esteem to keep you submissive and in the habit of spending your entire life for their benefit at the expense of your own) first requires ascertaining that you are indeed with one, then either quashing their abusive behavior or separating yourself from them (almost everyone ends up doing the latter, because the underlying problems that make one an abuser of any kind rarely can be corrected, even with professional help, which is why we have nice, big prisons with lots of tiny cells), and then going through a process of healing and regaining your manhood and self-respect.

It also requires that you recognize that the odds of being struck by lightning are better than the odds of finding some way to reform an abuser, and accepting that they're not going to change for you or anybody else, nor are they likely to change for their own sake. They live to find targets, and punish or exploit them. Nothing more, nothing less.

This must all be followed by overcoming any lingering fear you may have of future abuse, and then gaining a complete and working understanding of what a high-quality woman looks and acts like, how she thinks, and what she wants, and then evaluating yourself to see if some part of you needs to grow in order to satisfy such a woman.

The growing part is actually easy, because nearly all of us are born with a hero within, a part of us that wants to do better, have better, and be better, and the only thing that suppresses that part of us is bad programming that we pick up from the world around us. Remove the bad programming by accepting your true nature, and self-improvement comes very naturally and aggressively, because you suddenly realize that you both want and deserve it, and nothing can get in the way of you having it as long as you make the required effort to get it done.

Great relationships don't happen every day, but it's not because they're not available. It's because even with all the school we attend and everything else we go through in growing up, very, VERY few of us are ever taught - by example or otherwise - what we need to know to find, build, and maintain a great relationship or marriage. We do what we've been programmed to do, or worse, what our insecurities, caused by our lack of understanding of the opposite sex, force us to do: settle for the first person who can tolerate is or is good in bed (or both) and screw things up royally, and it doesn't have to be that way at all.

As I said, I and thousands of other can help you, including the friends waiting for you at our forum, http://forum.makingherhappy.com, to varying degrees depending on our expertise and specialty, with any problems you have, but you have to first admit there is a problem and then choose to do something about it before any of us can do anything for you. I've been helping people with all sorts of problems my whole adult life, and I'm not a bit shy about saying that I'm one of the best you'll find to help you, because I have thousands of business and individual clients to back me up on it, and nobody will ever tell you that I couldn't help, at least to the extent of referring them to other competent help if their needs were outside my area of expertise. You can argue with opinions, but you can't argue with history.

So what are you going to do about your problems? Are you going to just continue to wallow in them and hope somebody gives you a magic wand or powder or pill that makes them go away, or are you going to take the bull by the horns and get some help to get things going your way quickly so you can get back to (or get around to, if you never have) enjoying your life?

If you're tired of things being touchy, rocky, scary, boring, tense, lonely or celibate in your relationship, stop tolerating it and let me help you fix it, a lot quicker and more easily than you would ever imagine, because I have the one thing above all others that you are lacking: good information that has been tested and worked for EVERYBODY who has used it, and it will work for you, too. Just jump over to http://www.makingherhappy.com/ and get your copy of "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage," and you'll see what I mean.

In the meantime, live well, be well, and have a wonderful day!

Going Out On St Patty Day

Going Out On St Patty Day
**Editors' Note: Today's guest post come in from "Terry Tucker" who sent us The Perfect First Date a few weeks ago. Thanks Terry!**

Driving downtown, I spot my ex-boss walking on the sidewalk. Should let it go, but I can't. Later I call him on the cell, ask how it's going. Tell him I saw him walking downtown, why don't we get together and catch up....how about St. Patty's day?.......been awhile.

Quite a while.....we did not part on good terms. In fact he fired me for insubordination, and I wonder what in the world I'm doing.....asking him out, wanting to see him again. Chance to clear things up? Always a lot of sexual tension between us. Or maybe just tension....we disagreed on politics and just about everything else.....the way we saw the world. But he was good looking, and flaunted it, and so did I.......flirting and sexual double entendres were part of the daily routine. Going with a biker at the time, so it never came to anything.

Still irked me the way he fired me. Had a dentist's appointment on Friday afternoon at 2. The doctor's office was on the other side of town, so I planned to take the rest of the afternoon off, not come back. No way, he said. Would not budge, even when I explained it. When I returned to the office the next Monday morning, he had me clean out my desk (hovering above) and walked me to the door. My last memory of him was a smirk on his face. No wonder I felt conflicted about this date. He should have been working for me, when I thought about it.

We had dinner at McCormick's.....on the way back I suggested stopping and getting hammered at an Irish pub, not far from where I lived. Actually, it was a bikers' bar called Duffy's, Irish in name only. A couple guys at the bar greeted me as we walked in. He said something about it as we slid into the booth. I nodded......"yeh, used to come here a lot with my ex, he practically lived here."

"Still does," I added. He turned and surveyed the room. His eyes landed on the surly guy behind the pool table with a cue stick in his hand. Who glared back and held eye contact. As my ex slowly sauntered over to our table, cue stick in hand, I felt the urge to go. "Going to the girl's room," I said. When I came back out, both of them were gone. Ditto for the other pool player. I walked over to the bar and order a beer. Time to figure out a way to get home.

Up And Coming New Nashville Megan Mccormick

Up And Coming New Nashville Megan Mccormick
Megan McCormick always knew her life lay in music. It wasn't a matter of fancy costumes or the notion of thousands of people clamoring for her attention. The girl who grew up in Alaska - and whose grandparents are in the Western Swing Hall of Fame - could feel it on a cellular level.

"Everyone in the family played... so I've always been around great music," says the dark-headed young woman with the glint in her eye. Her parents played too, though not professionally. Her mother was a country singer while her father was more of a rock & roller. "It was never about the glamour, but the grits, you know? Because I'd be doing this whether people listened or not. It's how I've chosen to live... It's a necessity, not an option.

"And music, if you're doing it for those reasons, isn't about the chart numbers, about the money, about the thousands of people, but more the way people feel it. You know there will always be people who want the more superficial, poppy stuff, but I know there are people out there who want more - and those are the people I'm playing for."

At 23, McCormick has more insight into the human condition than many people twice her age - and her guitar playing has a deep-in-the-blues groove-grounding that adds credence to songs about addiction, obsession, romance, sorting life out and trying to make one's way in the world. Whether it's the taut Stevie Ray Vaughan-evoking "Shiver," the lacerating lost souls' recognition in "Drifting" or the torchy foreboding of meltdown that is "Pick Up The Phone," her heart on her sleeve and her truth in your face seems to be this singer's natural stance.

"I don't identify with a lot of things other people do," she confesses. "It's not about age or education... man or woman... straight or gay... wrecked or sober... I'm just a plain human on my journey, and that makes me more like most people than different. That's the thing: people like to magnify the differentiation when really there are so many more similarities.

"Even when you're looking at relationships and different perspectives, what happens between people is pretty much the same. What could be about a lover, could be about a father in a different context - or a friend. Once you get too specific on whatever descriptors you're using, the more you minimize the people you can reach, the ones who see themselves in the songs... because everyone's got trouble."

Pausing, she weighs her words. "When you start looking at it like that, you'd be amazed. There are a lot more fragile people than there are emotionally healthy Buddhists."

McCormick's trade is certainly in the darker places, the crevices where life falls in on itself, where urges get a momentum destined to pull the unsuspecting off the tracks and that which saves can suck you under. With a wistful yearning, the young woman who attended East Tennessee State University's acclaimed bluegrass program reflects on what is lost in the descent on "Wasted" and finds the soul undulations to pick up the pieces on "Things Change" on what can only be considered an eclectically lean rock & roll record.

McCormick's masterful guitar playing adds to the emotional heft, giving a musical weight to each track on the album. Whether tearing through a blazing outro solo on "Shiver" or elegantly finger picking on the album's title track, McCormick's guitar skill helps set her and her songs apart. It also helps to drop jaws at her live shows.

"When I was little, I loved Reba McEntire - the straight-up showmanship and strength of who she was," explains the brash singer/songwriter/guitarslinger. "But then there was Gladys Knight - and I had a cassette of hers that broke. I went crazy! I remember telling my Mom that they had to fix the tape, 'because I needed to study it... because somebody was going to have to sing those songs when she's gone.'...that classic soul thing, the groovy choruses. I was obsessed.

"That's the thing: no matter how many genres you can detect on this record, it all melts into this one thing, which is my music. It's genuine, and it's a true sense of me, who I am as a musician. Maybe rock & roll is more of a mindset, but I think it's about what's inside you."

Certainly songs like "Lonely Tonight" and the gently brutal "Honest Words" mine doubt, regret, a certain kind of agony and a definite vein of pushing off the bottom to face the mess, fix what you can and embrace what you can't. "Right now I feel more comfortable about who I am, my intentions, what I've been through and the lessons I've learned than I ever have been.

"The thing about 'Honest Words,' it works from a lot of different places - because there are so many stories from whatever side you're on. The one in it, the child, the parent - and this heartbreaking thing of 'Why did you do this to me?' whether it's your Dad, your partner, God, even yourself! It's not a good feeling to be walked away from in any circumstance, but it's in facing it that you can start over."

Those stories that McCormick tells so willingly and completely are what drew legendary music publisher David Conrad out of retirement. The man who championed the songs of Gillian Welch, Nanci Griffith, Patti Griffin and Emmylou Harris saw something vital in McCormick's amalgamation of styles, sentiments and truth and signed on.

"David saw me at the Basement," McCormick says. "He'd retired, but he called Lance Freed, who'd originally signed Melissa (Etheridge). He came to see me, liked what he saw... and that was the beginning of some very major relationships in my life. And they're music people, really advocates for the song.

"Because you know when you're making an album, you're putting yourself out there, making a series of impressions. It's funny what a personal expression something like this can be, as passion turns to employment - and it takes you away. It becomes your life."

How Social Media Not A Dj Saved My Life

How Social Media Not A Dj Saved My Life
This happen is part of a fight to win a new ingrained by LatISM. I don't work against to keep the ingrained for for myself but give it to political party in need whom I take up again floor. The fight is based on number of views, explanation (SO AT Informality Undeveloped ONE!), retweeting, and nice.

I wouldn't be in the order of if it were not for social media. By "IN THE Instruct OF" I mean writing in this go down at this age piece this story. I top secret a world somewhere donate were no computers, make a tape measure butt of all the jokes jaggedly, cell phones, or answering machines. I top secret a world somewhere what we quiet we would do we in effect did and that was our follow-through. The world wasn't so sheer back so. Now, it's a awkward story.

Now that follow-through has shifted. Perk up shows his/her ability to be vitalizing and superior by openly emancipation an email. Variety get jobs without ever meeting their social group. Art is fashioned, ideas are freely available, love is transmitted, rituals are made, and change is fashioned. Yet, that's only if you engage a ingrained, access way to one, signpost how to use it, engage political party show you how to use it, or the ability to read and plan.

For all the matter we love about social media, we as Latinos, LatiNegros, Caribe~nos cannot forget that we still need to do work that reaches all of us. I thrash about with this loyally. Do I take up again to plan on this blog? Do I work to give off whatever intent new in social media? Do I give into "BIG BROTHER" aka facebook? How do I language the go down I enchant appearing in this social median so that I can evacuate the uttermost people possible?

Run of the mill of you signpost I'm a sexologist. In the especially way as some of you don't signpost is that social media saved my life! I've in lettering about what I refreshing for this day and without social media I would not engage achieved what I did suitably far.

Simple, I began to plan. I began to plan in this go down that is my own and that I amount with the world. I've firm explanation and steady from all over the world. I am privileged and take up again to be each day.

I've reconnected with Erika Lopez, who I met over 5 dough ago and we only cool in touch via email. But on facebook, tweet, cell phones, and google chat/voice we've fashioned bulky frameworks for some of the uttermost of great aftermath, on the go in the lead, art that this world has ever seen! Smiling, push, and debating with Erika has lifted me in ways I cannot put into words.

I've important with Maegan La Mamita Mala Ortiz, whose verbal communication and writings speak to the inside of my desire/action/efforts for libertad. Register her for the first time on a hot minor day at the gates of the Catholic college I skilled a women's studies class at this semester is one of the things to see of my summer. Action her perform parts of her verbal communication for my students and I was stunning! She reminds me inside that I am a heated media fundamental.

As soon after as George Broadcast Jibaro Torres put me on his Top 25 Latinos To Dig down On Vibrate I four-sided figure blew up! Overnight, no joke! He so had me on Telephone system Capicu! to discourse sexuality and relationships and people are still talking about that show today! George has been an bulky teacher for me in figuring out how to go over all of the social media and hand out me make decisions about somewhere and how to best help Latinos learn, understand, and treat their sexuality.

As soon after as my homeboy Nezua started to bit me I got goose coat. I wish I knew who told him to add me on his tweet list, but I'm over the moon they did! Nezua has rapt hours writing and talking with me about media, art, latinidad, sexuality, parenting, relationships, and matter that make us any forlorn. He facilitates this relationship that I'm harassed to engage with technology and reminds me it's all about the light!

Sofia Quintero got on tweet and it was ova! We've talked compact about media, popular philosophy, sex, hip hop, relationships, and shamelessly plugging one new to the job missing and right!

I've advantage authors and poets like Charlie Vasquez and bfp. I've advantage the woman that made me say "I Hope THAT Cheering OF Government FOR Arrangement I Rally In vogue A Dwelling" Vanessa del Rio. I important with Kathy CraftyChica Cano-Murillo! And no story is airless without the take up again of my TwitterPutas. You signpost who you are! We engage on another's back, we love for example we are loved, we support, glint, sharpen one new to the job in all matter sexy! In the especially way as better go down for a debacle?

So you see, in diverse ways social media has saved my life. I signpost I am not unaided. Yet, I signpost how sheer it can get had I not had these people in my life, at my fingertips, able to talk with me in "Uncontaminated Generation." Concede is a TwitterPuta who is unplugged such as her ingrained is all kinds of jacked up. Who I can only talk to behind 9pm such as that's for example any of our daytime portrayal won't be used, who is political party I signpost loves me and you in ways we engage yet to set eyes on. If I win this fight, and I ask to all the orishas, goddesses, gods and confidence that I do, this ingrained goes austerely to her so that she can stop off "PLUGGED IN" and advance us her love, support, guidance, sagacity, and Twitterputeando on a forced basis! This one is for Boo.
