So, after Going Bovine, I briefly read The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart in one day, since I had heard so much about it and it was due at the library soon.

The Boyfriend List is about Ruby Oliver. A girl who was reasonably happy, that is, until she kissed her ex boyfriend and her social life blew to smithereens. She goes to therapy now. Her psychologist asked her to write a list of all the boys she was romantically involved with. This is her story.

I loved this book! Ruby was a quirky and fun character. I liked the pacing and the chapter structure as well as the writing. Also I loved how the frog on the cover was relevant to the novel. Really well done novel, although I preferred The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. One question though: What is up with E. Lockhart's protagonists always falling in love with assholes? Something to ponder.

Like my new background? I needed a change. I might try to get someone to do it for me though, if I come across the money to do so. *sighs* Also, I'm considering having a review structure so my reviews are more fun and interesting. Any suggestions? I'd love input!

Its Not A Conversation Anymore

This is the final scene of the 1999 movie The Big Kahuna. The movie is about three salesmen who are on a business trip together. Over the course of the movie, the trip goes terribly, clients are lost, and the characters end up questioning themselves as well as the meaning of "honest" human interaction.

The scene is beautifully done. Watching the full movie gives it even greater context and meaning as well.

What Danny DeVito's character talks about in regards to equating honesty to curiosity, and how life's mistakes and regrets are what build character are deeply in line with the first section of my book. You can approach women as a human with curiosity. Or you can approach them as a marketing rep, trying to pitch yourself to them. One is a man of character and one isn't. And as DeVito says, a man with character (or attractiveness) has it tattooed across his face -- it's impossible to hide or fake or even demonstrate, as it's always being demonstrated in everything he does.

There's another great scene in this movie where Kevin Spacey's character (Larry, off-screen), asks "Bob," the young evangelical Christian being lectured above, if he and his wife married each other because they loved each other, or married each other because of their principles (religion). Bob is obviously horrified by this question. Larry says something to the tune of, "You're a principled person Bob. Your wife is too. You both stand for something, which is great. But sometimes people don't marry the person, they marry the principles. Are you sure you and your wife didn't marry each other's principles?"

What this all gets to is that to have a true connection and true attraction between two people, one must present oneself honestly. And to present oneself honestly, one must be self-aware, or as DeVito says above, one must have regrets -- one must be aware of one's own faults and have practiced self-forgiveness. Because you can't accept and love the faults in others until you accept and love the faults in yourself.

Rather, you'll only fall in love with their pitch, with their marketing rep; and they with yours. And you will lock each other into a relationship based on principle, not personality.

REVIEW

Heather Hepler is becoming a master at writing sweet, light, food related contemporary YA fiction. I enjoyed her first book "Cupcake Queen". Her newest novel "Love? Maybe" is even better.

Piper Paisley (an adorable name if ever there was one) is a cynic. Understandable since her mom and dad split up, her dad's hardly part of her life, and even her step-father took off. Piper has to be reminded of Valentine's Day constantly, though, since it's her birthday. This year, her friends are determined to erase her cynicism and give Piper a true Valentine's Day. The three girls concoct love potion chocolates, not truly believing it will work...but does it?

Piper is a delightful main character. She doesn't have the most cheerful outlook on love, but her life experiences haven't taught her to be hopeful. Cynicism aside, she is a mature, kind, responsible teenager. Her mother works so many hours that Piper gives up most of her free time to take care of her cute little half-siblings. She also is a crucial part of Jan's Chocolates. Her organizational skills and logical nature form the backbone that keeps her boss's chocolate store running. She is the type of girl I would want to be friends with.

The other main teen characters are Piper's best friends Claire and Jillian. As well as next door neighbor Charlie, handsome Ben Donovan and nerdy Jeremy. Claire was a sweet girl, but bogged down in mourning her jerky ex-boyfriend. Jillian is the muscle behind the trio. She is my main criticism of the book. She's so forceful in trying to get Piper on board with romance and whatever else Jillian wants that she comes off as a pushy jerk. It wasn't until the end of the book that I understood why Piper liked her. I wish Heather had balanced Jillian's character better. Piper has had a huge crush on Ben Donovan for years. So much so that she totally missed the perfectness of her best bud Charlie. Or maybe she does know but she's afraid to take the leap.

The plot of "Love? Maybe" is not a great shocker. It follows a pretty standard romance plot where the characters end up with what they deserve (in a good way) rather than what they think they want on a superficial level. This isn't a spoiler. You know it's going to end this way. It's the exact journey that's the fun part.

And fun it is. Like chocolate? Then you will definitely like "Love? Maybe". I spent much of this book drooling as Piper sold various candy concoctions. There's your normal chocolate treats, but Jan's Chocolates has options for the more adventurous as well. Think bacon truffles (I've had chocolate covered bacon - surprisingly good). My personal favorite (although not chocolate) were her Consternation Hearts, with sayings like "Buzz off."

You should definitely pick up" Love? Maybe" if you're in the mood for a light pick-me-up romance. The characters are nice people, their problems are realistic, the romantic tension builds up to the perfect conclusion, and best of all, the backdrop is delicious! Now I'm wondering what food Heather is going to be feature in her next book. My appetite is already whetted.

Review:

The Celeb Next Door is the first Hilary Freeman book I've read, and I think it was a great place to start. It's the launch title for her brand new Camden Town Tales series, and is a fast-paced, east to read story perfect for teenage girls. It's chock-full of romance, friendship and celebrities, and paints a brilliant picture of London. I for one have never been to Camden, but now I want to - the markets sound amazing!

Each character in The Celeb Next Door is realistic and likeable, and generally behave as teenagers do. I personally couldn't identify with the constant celeb spotting that Rosie, Sky and Vix make a bit of a hobby, but that's because I've never lived in a star-studded area. I imagine it's a lot of fun though, like Rosie learns, status isn't everything!

Music plays a big part in this book, as the drummer from a popular band movies in next door to Rosie. Being a music fan myself, I loved this aspect of the book - how cool would it be to get an insider look into band goings on?! Of course, the fact that Rufus has a cute younger brother, Max, is pretty much all that's on Rosie's mind. They're so well suited, and go through all the usual problems and dilemmas teenagers are hit with. I completely believed in them and their down-to-earth personalities, and Freeman has a great style when it comes to writing teen behaviour.

Fans of Cathy Hopkins' Million Dollar Mates series will love this, as well those who like Cathy Cassidy's various girly offerings. I'm really looking forward to the next Camden Town Tales book, Stuck On Me, and I hope it's as good as this one. Fingers crossed there isn't long to wait!

I'll be honest. I don't watch soap operas. (Ok, there was a year in college when all the girls in my dorm would congregate in the common area after lunch to watch DOOL. But I didn't understand a thing that was happening!)

But when Kevin and Roger from "We Love Soaps" approached me to act as a correspondent at the Paley Center for the celebration of the 10,000th episode of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, I thought yes, why not! It would at least be a fun night out.

We checked in early and got our place in the press line and waited for the stars to appear. And so they did! Slowly they started to arrive, and, in no time, there was a flurry of actors and cameras and microphones.

We got to speak with a few of the cast members - Doug Davidson, Melody Thomas Scott, Kristoff St. John, and Kate Linder. All very lovely and excited to be there and celebrate the feat and stay power of the soap they live and love.

Once the press was over, we moved inside to panel discussion with Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden, Jeanne Cooper, Christian Leblanc, Joshua Morrow, Michelle Stafford, the above mentioned Doug Davidson, Melody Thomas Scott, Kristoff St. John and recently replaced head writer and executive producer Maria Arena Bell.

They started with a clip of scenes that spanned the history of the show, from its beginning in 1973 to more current scenes. The audience laughed and cried during the 10-minute video, reliving some of the storylines they have followed for so long. For me, it was nice to see the actors that were on stage in action. I quickly realized why they were there that night and why they've been on the show for so long - great acting, major on-screen charisma.

Once the video was over, the discussion started. Listening to this group of actors who have been working together for so long, one thing was clear - they love what they do. They're proud of their work and they appreciate the success they have experienced. And they enjoy the challenges that a daytime drama brings to the actors: no rehearsal time, 1-take scenes, 1 episode per day of shoot. Looking at it this way, it's quite amazing that these actors are able to turn in such great performances, day in and day out.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS has been the number one rated soap for over 20 years. That is a feat of incredible proportions. They have such devoted fans that several audience members came from out of town or country to be at the event, one of which explained that he has watched every episode since 1973, even sneaking into his parents' room to watch it when his mom made him leave the family room during 'taboo' scenes! That's dedication!

Closing out the night, Maria Arena Bell, having recently departed, gave such a graceful bow out - saying how proud she was of her work and that like every good soap opera story, "I got killed off."

I'll be honest. I don't watch soap operas. But after this event, I just might start watching Y&R.
