Abc Conflict Resolution

Abc Conflict Resolution
The ABC drill is intended to show you that you have unique, personal beliefs that drive how you see the world. We think that our beliefs are accurate and that's why we hold them; but often our beliefs are colored by our personal experiences and what we've learned in our families. Personal beliefs are not necessarily universally held beliefs.

What you personally believe about the things that are happening around you, affect how you behave. Our beliefs may or may not match reality; and our beliefs may or may not have a positive impact on our lives. Our hope is that this drill will give you the freedom to start choosing the beliefs that work for you and discarding the beliefs that work against you.

How many of you have experienced this? You say or do something with the best of intentions and it is completely misinterpreted and a fight erupts.

Your INTENTIONS can be completely noble, but the IMPACT may be a disaster! This is an example of how your beliefs don't match your mate's beliefs.

This is one of the biggest mistakes we make in relationships. We think that everybody sees things the same way that we do. This disconnect can lead to conflict and the understanding of this can change the way

you communicate.

So we are going to break this down for you. Every experience has an A, a B, and a C.

A = ACTION

We have conflict when this happens...

B = BELIEF

When this happens my BELIEF is that...

C = CONSEQUENCE

Based on my BELIEF, this happens next...

Let's say you, the husband, get home and your wife is on the phone. You might be thinking, "She's been (A) talking on the phone all day and (B) ignoring her responsibilities. She's just plain irresponsible". The consequence is that a (C) fight erupts.

Now, underlying even this negative belief is another, deeper belief.

You might be thinking, "She's been (A) talking on the phone all day and (B) ignoring her responsibilities, which means that she doesn't care about me". The consequence is that a (C) fight erupts.

We are now going to focus on ONE issue that creates conflict in your relationship.

We are going to take this conflict and diagram it out like you would diagram a sentence. We are NOT going to try to solve this issue; that comes later so be patient. You will label the A-action, B-belief, and C-consequence.

HERE'S AN EXAMPLE

When you "A" - come home late from work, I "B" believe that you are procrastinating because you don't want to spend time with me and then I "C" give you the cold shoulder when you walk in the door.

So start with the A-ACTION and write this in your notebook.

-30 seconds-

Now write down the B-BELIEF and write this in your notebook.

-30 seconds-

Now write down the C-CONSEQUENCE and write this in your notebook.

-30 seconds-

You are now going to share with your partner.

LADIES: Share your A-B-C conflict with your partner.

-2 Minute-

MEN: This is your opportunity to play therapist: Give your perspective on an alternative / positive belief in the diagram.

-1 Minute-

MEN: Share your A-B-C conflict with your partner.

-2 Minute-

LADIES: This is your opportunity to play therapist: Give your perspective on an alternative/positive belief in the diagram.

-1 Minute-

I hope you are able to see that what you believe drives what you do and how you feel. The point of the ABC drill is to answer two questions: does your BELIEF match reality and does your BELIEF work FOR your relationship or AGAINST your relationship.

The good news is that you have choices in your thought life; you can choose what you think and believe, just like you have choices over your behavior.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Now that you have a better understanding of your conflict and how each of you has a different perspective on the conflict, we can now start on the process of resolving conflict. Before entering into the arena of conflict resolution, make sure that you fully understand the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. A word of caution - each of you must have a handle on your anger and not be in a triggered state. Trying to resolve conflict when you are in a heightened state is a set up for failure.

This illustration gives you the entire end-to-end process. It may look simple, but it can be quite challenging. Each person will go through the slow and steady process, then you will switch and the 2nd person will do the same. Be sure to stick with the allotted time and if you need more time, negotiate an agreement to add. Do not filibuster! Remember, when one person is talking, the other is listening very carefully.

END TO END PROCESS

* One issue with a complete ABC Picture
* Hear each side's perspective and feelings
* Mirror back the perspective and feelings
* Hear each side's best case solution
* What are you willing to settle for?
* Negotiate a mutual resolution

The first step of Conflict Resolution is explaining your perspective. This should be from the heart and as real as you can be. This can be a purely selfish point of view. The challenge will be for the listening partner; you will have to listen carefully, even if what you are hearing is making you mad. The listener will have to put their feelings, thoughts, and opinions on hold for a moment. Remember, their perspective is their perspective and each of you will have a chance to share. You do not have to agree with this version of the story; you simply have to empathize with the dilemma by mirroring back what was said. If you are getting triggered, you have just made this about you. LISTEN! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO AGREE WITH THEM!

Here is an example of (A) ONE ISSUE, (B) TWO BELIEFS/PERSPECTIVES, (C) THE CONSEQUENCE.

Her Side

When you (A) challenge me about every penny I spend, I (B) feel belittled and powerless, then I (C) shut down and a cold war starts.

His Side

When you (A) spend money that we don't have, I (B) feel the need to control you, then I (C) take the credit cards and a crap storm starts.

HER PERSPECTIVE

LADIES: Give your side of the issue; describe the battle in as much detail as possible. Share how this makes you feel.

-2 Minutes-

MEN: Mirror back what she just said, "What I heard you say is...... I know you feel..."

-30 Seconds-

ROAD BLOCKS

Often the conflict gets stirred up when you start to hear each other's perspective. Here are some common roadblocks that must be avoided at all costs if you truly want to resolve the conflict. If you throw out a roadblock, you will stop the work and turn this into a power struggle instead of a resolution session!

Some Typical Road Blocks

* Challenging the speaker
* Defending yourself
* Trying to rewrite the story with more "accuracy"

HIS PERSPECTIVE

OK ladies, this is your time to LISTEN!

MEN: Give your side of the issue; describe the battle in as much detail as possible. Share how this makes you feel.

-2 Minute-

LADIES: Mirror back what he just said, "What I heard you say is...... I know you feel..."

-30 Seconds-

WIN-WIN

NEGOTIATE, BARTER, COMPROMISE, SACRIFICE

You have now heard each other's side of the story. You've also heard each other's feelings about the issue. You're now going to share your own personal view of how to solve this issue. Remember to stay on ONE topic.

LADIES: Tell your mate your best-case solution and how you would feel about getting this issue behind you.

-1 Minute-

MEN: Mirror back what she just said AND how she feels, "What I heard is... I know you feel..."

-1 Minute-

MEN: Tell your mate your best-case solution and how you would feel about getting this issue behind you.

-1 Minute-

LADIES: Mirror back what he just said AND how he feels, "What I heard is... I know you feel..."

-1 Minute-

Now that you have heard each other's ideas on resolving the issue, we're going to compromise and share what we would be willing to settle for.

LADIES: Tell your mate what you would be willing to settle for to resolve this issue.

-1 Minute-

MEN: Mirror back what she just said, "What I heard you say is..."

-30 Seconds-

MEN: Tell your mate what you would be willing to settle for to resolve this issue.

-1 Minute-

LADIES: Mirror back what he just said, "What I heard you say is..."

-30 Seconds-

You should now have as much information as you need to get to a solution if you are willing to give a little. Negotiate, barter, compromise, sacrifice, and get creative!

Now take 3 Minutes to negotiate a solution that is a WIN/WIN for both of you. Be sure to include YOUR COMMITMENT to make this work. Once you have the solution write it down as a game plan.

-3 Minutes-

Help Your Global Talent Succeed And Lead Cultivate Communication Skills

Help Your Global Talent Succeed And Lead Cultivate Communication Skills
"Guest post by Nancy Vason:"

As leaders of global businesses, you draw from a deep well of talent. You employ engineers, plant managers, economists, IT managers and marketing directors from all over the world. Most are highly educated, technically competent professionals. But are they effective communicators?

Today, communication effectiveness is judged in part on how well these professionals express themselves in English. According to the Harvard Business Review, English is now the global language of business, and more and more multinational companies are mandating English as the common corporate language.

The challenge for your non-native managers is not simply to speak English with correct grammar, but to speak convincingly and confidently.

A 2011 white paper jointly published by the GlobalEnglish Corporation and Human Capital Institute reported that 70% of global employees are non-native speakers - and only 7% think they speak English well enough to do their jobs.

The non-native speakers in your company may perform their daily responsibilities well. But what else do their jobs require? Are they leading global teams? Are they making presentations to executives? Are they sharing their ideas on conference calls? Are they debating strategies in meetings?

If so, they need persuasive communication skills. In fact, their ability to communicate will determine their future as leaders. Why? Because leadership requires sharing your vision, forging relationships built on trust, and convincing others that your ideas have merit.

So let's look further at this topic and explore two questions:

* What communication skills are most critical for non-native speakers?
* How can you cultivate the communication skills of your global team?

WHAT COMMUNICATION SKILLS ARE MOST CRITICAL?

From my experience, non-native speakers must be able to express their ideas clearly, whether in formal presentations or informal meetings. They need to demonstrate CREDIBILITY, CONNECT with their listeners and BE CONFIDENT OF THEIR ENGLISH.

CREDIBILITY starts with having a clear, concise message. Most non-native speakers try to share their depth of knowledge instead of focusing on the needs of their listeners. When preparing their remarks, they need to ask: what issue or challenge is important to my listeners and how will my recommendation address that? Also, what is the most critical information my listeners need to know? Then they should limit the discussion to 2-3 key ideas and support them with examples, anecdotes and data. This keeps the discussion focused and prevents the non-native speaker from struggling with long explanations.

CONNECTING with the listener involves having great eye contact and displaying great passion for the topic. In business, people trust people who look them right in the eye.Because of cultural differences, this can be hard for some non-native speakers. A native Korean with 10+ years in international business recently shared an example with me. Several years ago, she and her Australian boss interviewed a gentleman from Koreafor a job. She thought the Korean man answered their questions well, but her Australian manager disagreed. His impression was that he was not interested in selling his ideas because he stared at the wall during the conversation. Ultimately, his lack of direct eye contact cost him the job.

BEING CONFIDENT IN SPEAKING ENGLISH is a hurdle for most non-native speakers. If they lack confidence, they may decline opportunities to speak or hold back during team discussions. The non-native speaker should not aspire to be perfect, but rather to be understood. Accents are only a problem when they prevent comprehension of words and ideas. To build confidence, non-native speakers should rehearse their presentations out loud multiple times before they present. Preparing for questions is even more important. By anticipating the questions, writing them down in advance, and practicing answers out loud, the non-native speaker will feel more in control.

HOW CAN YOU CULTIVATE YOUR TEAM'S COMMUNICATION SKILLS?

As a leader, you set the tone in the way you communicate. Be sensitive to the challenges non-native speakers face. Provide a supportive work environment that encourages dialogue, collaboration and professional development. Reward the expression of thoughts, even if they are not perfectly stated. Here are a few other ideas:

START A MENTORING PROGRAM. This will allow non-native speakers to learn from seasoned colleagues. For example, the mentor might listen to the speaker's presentations and give feedback on confusing phrases or mispronounced words. Mentors can also suggest resources and tools to help the non-native speaker improve English competency. For example in Atlanta, the Georgia Tech Language Institute offers tutors who can help business people improve their English language skills.

OFFER LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. Many global companies have successful programs, and they reinforce the value international managers bring to the organization. In some programs, non-native speakers participate in cross-functional teams to solve problems and present recommendations to senior management. Team presentations allow managers to showcase their expertise without having to be the only speaker on stage. In another example, a large beverage manufacturer sponsors a global leadership program for women. It gives participants the opportunity to make persuasive business presentations to a small group of colleagues, with two executives on hand to give constructive feedback.

ENCOURAGE YOUR MANAGERS TO ATTEND COMMUNICATION SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMS. These courses help participants enhance their verbal skills. Whether the focus is on presentation skills, negotiation skills, interviewing skills or media training, the programs typically include relevant practice on camera with feedback from a coach. Our company, Speechworks, offers a presentation skills class specifically for non-native speakers.

Global businesses benefit from having a culturally diverse, highly talented work force. Non-native English speakers typically have strong technical and operational skills. But to succeed and to lead, they need to be persuasive communicators.

You can cultivate these skills within your global company. Be an advocate for persuasive communication, accurately assess the needs of your team, and provide opportunities for them to grow and develop. Then watch as their confidence soars!

Speed Dating Put To The Test

Speed Dating Put To The Test
A guest nap by Wray HerbertPsychologists are very interested in first parody, and in the nature of romantic attraction. For example makes a date attractive, very in next to no time and in a romantic way? And what turns people off? Is falling in love just a subset of liking? It's well important that we comply with to like people who like us, and people who are generally acceptable comply with to be well liked. Does this assume for romantic attraction as well? Do amorous people attract the most attention? Or is it haughty alluring, as the old saw has it, to play "hard to get"?A have fun of psychologists firm to dig some of these questions experimentally, and the tool they used for their research was-that's right-speed dating. Paul Eastwick and Eli Finkel of Northwestern and Daniel Mochon and Dan Ariely of MIT had about 150 competent men and women, about 20 being old, go on four-minute "dates" with about a dozen people of the opposite sex. For each of their dates, these men and women assumed thumbs-up or thumbs-down. But they as well ready a set of questions, doomed to dart mark of moreover their romantic attraction and how extensively "chemistry" they grown-up in each fracas. These were as well the people who were apparent as not at all picky-or, to put it other way, as lonely. Cute Or Cruel The Fine Line Between Play And Abuse In Relationships And Marriage

Cute Or Cruel The Fine Line Between Play And Abuse In Relationships And Marriage
One of the easiest ways to learn how to do something right, including creating attraction, is to model the behavior of someone who is already skilled. However, you still have to know enough about the process to know whether the behavior you are thinking about modeling is the right behavior to model.

I hope you are enjoying this day as much as I am. In the July 13, 2011 edition of this newsletter (http://forum.makingherhappy.com/showthread.php/770-Pleasure-or-Pain-More-on-Horseplay-and-quot-Picking-quot-in-Relationships-and-Marriage), I wrote to you about playing with women, and how many of the things we do with each other as men to bond and help each other develop "a thicker skin" are perceived differently by women, cruel in fact, because they use the same behavior to attack each other and therefore misconstrue some of our joking as an attack as well.

This is obviously not well-received by a woman from a man who tells her that he loves her. That lesson inspired the following letter from Nina, who notes the difference between ignorance and abuse (and yes, there are valuable lessons here for those of you whose relationships don't involve abuse, so please stick with me here and you'll see what I mean):

Hi David,

My husband and I have been reading your newsletters since we started having trouble last summer, and your book has made a world of difference in our life. We were in a bit of a death spiral, bored and frustrated with each other and had begun picking and sniping at each other in retaliation against what we both thought were deliberate attacks and disrespect, and I need to thank you for helping us get that all sorted out.

He's back to being the man I married, and I feel better about our marriage and my life now than I've ever felt, because Karl never bores me anymore. He's fun and playful one minute and strong and decisive the next, and in spite of his growing "spare tire" around his middle and his receding hairline, he keeps me in the clouds, if you know what I mean. And by the way, thanks so much for teaching him about the value of anticipation and taking it slow. We're both enjoying that part of our life more than we did during our dating and honeymoon periods combined.

I wanted to tell you about something I saw today, and have been seeing since our new neighbors moved in. I didn't realize what I was really seeing until your newsletter about how men and women play differently. I thought that this was what our neighbor Gene was doing to his wife Carrie, but I think I was wrong. Every time we're over there, no matter who is around or how Carrie really looks (she's usually very slender and fit but sometimes she puts on a couple of extra pounds when she has to work late a lot at the hospital here), he'll walk up and say to her, "You're looking pretty chunky in those shorts (or pants or whatever). We're going to have to get that weight off of you!" And then he'll swat her on her bottom or pinch her or grab her and pull her skin to make love handles. It embarrasses her so badly that she'll start crying and walk away, and he just laughs.

I thought for a long time that he was really that stupid and insensitive, but I've noticed other things lately. She never leaves the house without him, and very often when we're all together and she's asked a question, she'll look at him before answering, and won't answer until he makes eye contact with her and twitches some part of his face. I've never seen him hit her, and haven't seen any bruises, but I think he's controlling and abusing her, because she never looks happy and often the only way I can describe the way she looks is "trapped." Is there anything that I can say to her or do for her to help her through this?

Thank you so much for your help, and for listening,

Nina

My reply:

Hi Nina,

I'm so happy to hear that you and your husband have had such success, and I'm equally sorry to hear that your neighbor is having such trouble. There is nothing to help her through, except exiting the relationship, unless she wants to risk going to jail by cracking him in the head with an iron skillet next time he abuses her, and the best that can do is give her relief, not a good marriage. A good marriage can't be had with an abuser.

Seriously, this is probably out of your league and hers. She needs some professional help to help her understand that she doesn't have to tolerate his abuse and should in fact give him an ultimatum to either stop or leave, and that's obviously not something that can be successfully handled by e-mail or phone, so she needs to find a local counselor.

What you can do for her is to point out to her that her accepting his behavior is self-destructive and unnecessary, that his behavior is controlling and abusive and not the "norm" for male behavior, and that if she is uncomfortable facing him down herself that she should get counseling from someone who specializes in abuse cases and start getting the problem handled. But be warned, she may try to suck you into her problems, or begrudge you sticking your nose into her marriage, and getting involved in your neighbor's domestic disputes and relationship problems can land you in all sorts of trouble, including emotionally draining you to the point of damaging your relationship with your husband or causing a feud with your neighbor, so don't let that happen.

Take care, and keep in touch,

David

What can the rest of us learn from this situation? First, some women are just as capable and skilled at this kind of controlling, demoralizing behavior as men; indeed, some of them are even better at it than we are. They may not even make a pretense of playing with you; they may just attack you outright in public, airing your dirty laundry, discussing your mistakes and failures, describing in detail your embarrassing moments, complaining about things you do, etc.

But not every attack is abuse. Pay close attention here so you can learn to distinguish between a desperate plea for negotiation and abuse...

When a woman does this infrequently and it's limited to a single issue, like some on-going disagreement that you're having, it's a sign that the two of you are having a communication problem on that issue, she's frustrated, and thinking that she may get you to work harder to listen to her if she gives you a dose of embarrassment and frustration as punishment. Not the best solution in the world for sure, but malice, control, and abuse are not the motivation behind the problem. She's merely getting desperate for communication and trying to bully you a bit to get it and punishing you for making it rough for her. HOWEVER...

If the attacks are frequent, and not related to problems, but to things that destroy self-esteem, like overtly trying to embarrass you over your receding hairline or recent weight gain, being passed over for promotion at work, etc., hitting hot buttons that have nothing to do with anything in dispute and especially target your manhood and independence, you have a spouse abuser on your hands, seeking to control you and keep you close to home by destroying your self-esteem and making you seek their approval.

On the issue of abuse, we have it just a little easier than most women. Most of us don't generally have to worry about our wife beating us to a pulp and putting us in the hospital. But that's about the only advantage. They can still hurt us financially in any number of ways, including burying us in debt and keeping us there, relentlessly putting us down in front of people to the point that we withdraw from the outside world to keep from being embarrassed in front of anybody we know, acting seductive toward other men in our presence or even bringing them home, and in extreme cases, even mixing things like mild poisons, things we're allergic to (peanuts, shell fish, etc.) in our food in just high enough a concentration to make us miserable without endangering us. Abusers, male and female alike, don't want their victim dead, they want them utterly submissive, alive and healthy enough to fully experience the abuse.

If you are with such a person, you can leave or throw them out. There may not be any criminal charges to file, and life may be a bit rough for a little while as you get used to being on your own again, but the truth is that no matter how insecure your abuser makes you feel, you don't have to take it, and there are others in the world who will treat you with love and respect. It may take you awhile to heal and regain both your self-respect and your ability to trust women again, but you can do it, and I and thousands of others are capable of helping you through it, so you don't have to do it alone, either.

Being well-matched is one of the cornerstones of a great relationship, and something I devote a lot of time and energy to explaining and helping you to understand in "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage," and being strapped to an abuser for the rest of your life is definitely NOT what anyone except possibly a masochist would call "being well-matched."

Getting away from an abuser (and that includes predators who use attacks on your self-esteem to keep you submissive and in the habit of spending your entire life for their benefit at the expense of your own) first requires ascertaining that you are indeed with one, then either quashing their abusive behavior or separating yourself from them (almost everyone ends up doing the latter, because the underlying problems that make one an abuser of any kind rarely can be corrected, even with professional help, which is why we have nice, big prisons with lots of tiny cells), and then going through a process of healing and regaining your manhood and self-respect.

It also requires that you recognize that the odds of being struck by lightning are better than the odds of finding some way to reform an abuser, and accepting that they're not going to change for you or anybody else, nor are they likely to change for their own sake. They live to find targets, and punish or exploit them. Nothing more, nothing less.

This must all be followed by overcoming any lingering fear you may have of future abuse, and then gaining a complete and working understanding of what a high-quality woman looks and acts like, how she thinks, and what she wants, and then evaluating yourself to see if some part of you needs to grow in order to satisfy such a woman.

The growing part is actually easy, because nearly all of us are born with a hero within, a part of us that wants to do better, have better, and be better, and the only thing that suppresses that part of us is bad programming that we pick up from the world around us. Remove the bad programming by accepting your true nature, and self-improvement comes very naturally and aggressively, because you suddenly realize that you both want and deserve it, and nothing can get in the way of you having it as long as you make the required effort to get it done.

Great relationships don't happen every day, but it's not because they're not available. It's because even with all the school we attend and everything else we go through in growing up, very, VERY few of us are ever taught - by example or otherwise - what we need to know to find, build, and maintain a great relationship or marriage. We do what we've been programmed to do, or worse, what our insecurities, caused by our lack of understanding of the opposite sex, force us to do: settle for the first person who can tolerate is or is good in bed (or both) and screw things up royally, and it doesn't have to be that way at all.

As I said, I and thousands of other can help you, including the friends waiting for you at our forum, http://forum.makingherhappy.com, to varying degrees depending on our expertise and specialty, with any problems you have, but you have to first admit there is a problem and then choose to do something about it before any of us can do anything for you. I've been helping people with all sorts of problems my whole adult life, and I'm not a bit shy about saying that I'm one of the best you'll find to help you, because I have thousands of business and individual clients to back me up on it, and nobody will ever tell you that I couldn't help, at least to the extent of referring them to other competent help if their needs were outside my area of expertise. You can argue with opinions, but you can't argue with history.

So what are you going to do about your problems? Are you going to just continue to wallow in them and hope somebody gives you a magic wand or powder or pill that makes them go away, or are you going to take the bull by the horns and get some help to get things going your way quickly so you can get back to (or get around to, if you never have) enjoying your life?

If you're tired of things being touchy, rocky, scary, boring, tense, lonely or celibate in your relationship, stop tolerating it and let me help you fix it, a lot quicker and more easily than you would ever imagine, because I have the one thing above all others that you are lacking: good information that has been tested and worked for EVERYBODY who has used it, and it will work for you, too. Just jump over to http://www.makingherhappy.com/ and get your copy of "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage," and you'll see what I mean.

In the meantime, live well, be well, and have a wonderful day!
