Introduction to series "Super '70s and '80s."
In back-to-back weeks in January 1979, two hourlong, primetime, live-action superhero specials called Legends of the Superheroes aired on NBC; they were called "The Challenge" and "The Roast."
Produced by animation studio Hanna-Barbera, these shows have sometimes been described as a live-action version of Saturday morning cartoon Super Friends, which was near or at its peak of popularity at the time. Deliberately hokey to begin with, the shows were ratings failures and have dated even worse...which in part explains why they've become cult classics.
The character lineup included only two of the five mainstay Super Friends; rights to Superman and Wonder Woman were tied up in bigger and better ways and much-maligned Aquaman was probably not even considered.
Though Adam West and Burt Ward reprised their iconic 1960s roles as Batman and Robin and most of the villains were portrayed by established comedians of the day, I was more interested in talking to those performers whom we had not heard of before-or heard from since. Meaning just about everyone else in the cast.
The show featured the first live-action film portrayals of Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Black Canary, Huntress, and Atom and the first-ever live-action portrayals of Hawkman, Huntress, and Atom (Flash, Green Lantern, and Black Canary were in the Sea World superheroes water ski show, which began in 1976).
This unused studio shot is especially charming because the two ladies at right
are laughing and Sinestro is sticking out his tongue.
Interesting to read "comic book heroes are very much in vogue."
We hear that a lot these days, but this article was written in 1979.
Also interesting to note that the superhero the paper chose to show was
the least well-known of the bunch. And I loved the zinger presuming
that Adam West and Burt Ward "evidently have decided to give up
their fight against typecasting."
Though these performers were superheroes only on TV, it felt like they were now operating under real-life secret identities. The easiest to find was Rod Haase (Flash). The hardest was everyone else (including two whom I have still not found).
In the first year of searching (sandwiched between more urgent projects), I found only Rod and Bill Nuckols (Hawkman).
Rod Haase today

On that search, this is one tactic I tried with some of the performers (using Howard Murphy [Green Lantern] as an example): I sent a blanket e-mail to the most common e-mail formats (howardmurphy, howard.murphy, howard murphy) at the biggest domains (gmail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, aol.com, and so on...even juno.com, for heck's sake). I got some perplexed responses but none from the right people.
In January 2011, a year after I began my own personal "Challenge" to find these guys, I felt I was almost out of options. But rather than stick a fork in my "Roast," I decided to place an ad in Variety, figuring even as I did it that it was more than a long shot.
Within a couple of weeks of the ad running, I'd found both Garrett Craig (Captain Marvel) and Barbara Joyce (Huntress)...but the ad had nothing to do with it. I heard from no one in response to the ad.
And with Barbara, I was too late. More on her in her own post...
As with many others I tracked down for this blog series, the LOTS performers were astounded that someone would bother. None suspected that more than a handful of people would even remember the shows, and most answered my interview questions skeptical that anyone today would care about the answers. (Hence some of the responses are brief.)
The two I have failed to track down are Howard Murphy and Danuta Wesley (Black Canary).
Before we get to the interviews themselves, a bit more on two of the performers I did find.
How I found Bill Nuckols:
* Thanks to Andy Mangels's article about this show in Back Issue #25 (12/07), I knew Bill had been a bodybuilder, so I poked around on bodybuilding forums. (Yes, for the first time.)
* I contacted a commenter named Joe because he was clearly knowledgeable about bodybuilders of the 1970s, when Bill had been active in the scene.
* Joe wrote back. He didn't know where Bill was now but did pass on details from the two articles about Bill in his possession.
* I used those details to try to get closer, but to no avail.
* Joe then gave me names of three of Bill's former competitors; I e-mailed the two for whom I could find e-mails.
* The third is a Hollywood stuntman, and apparently a well-known one. SAG gave me his contact information and he most kindly shared what he remembered. The key piece of information was that Bill and his wife (whose name he remembered) had divorced and had no kids.
* I checked California divorce records, which gave me the hinge I needed: Bill's middle initial. (Yes, I, too, was surprised that there were more than one Bill Nuckols in the country.)
* Searching multiple public records databases, I found who I thought was my Bill Nuckols, but there was no contact information. However, the record listed names of relatives, and I could find a phone number for some of them. The first I called turned out to be Bill's mother.
She said "He doesn't look the same," but then, who would after 30 years? Through her, I was soon able to speak directly with Bill. Somewhat cautious at first, he rather cryptically said that when one has spent time in California (he left in 1983), all kinds of people might come around looking for you. Once I further explained why I had been looking for him, he opened up.
He lives a block from a comic shop and has never gone in there.
Finding Garrett Craig:
I got almost nothing out of SAG, as per their protocol, but I was able to squeeze from them that the most recent time mail had been returned from Garrett's last known address was in 1998. In other words, I was squeezing a dry lemon. SAG did also mention that there were "significant funds" waiting for Garrett, and since they weren't looking for him, it made me all the more determined to find him.
Ultimately, through channels that must remain hidden, I managed to obtain that former address, which proved to be the vital link to Garrett. After finding him, I urged him to contact SAG...and he did...and was sent a check for 130.
Apparently, the West Coast has a different definition of "significant."
I had been prepared to accept no substitute for Garrett...until I learned he is a substitute. A resident sub at an elementary school, to be exact-and from what I can tell, one beloved by students and staff alike.
I have a feeling that from this point on, upon entering classrooms, he will sometimes be greeted by a collective and good-natured "Shazam!"
Photos courtesy of Garrett Craig. As you may have noticed.
I have since had the good fortune to meet the saintly Garrett Craig in person.
I was bearing a small gift.
In late 2010, Warner Bros. released the DVD of the show. None of the performers I've been in touch with heard from Warner beforehand, nor are any receiving residuals.
I got permission to post all personal images; if you want to repost, please do the same and ask me first.
Special thanks to Andy Mangels.
Welcome to the first-ever oral history of Legends of the Superheroes.

Note: I am not passing for a man in any circumstances, so none of this is about how others treat me. It is all about my exploring 1) what I perceive to be the rules for men, and 2) how it feels for me to imagine following the rules I imagine men follow, and 3) seeing if I might be doing things differently if I were a man but all other things were equal.
1) When walking outside, I feel an obligation to hold my head up and to be upright.
Normally, I adopt whatever position takes the least energy, because I am so tired and it's hard to get around.
But if I think of myself as male, I feel like I have no choice but to stand up straight and keep my head up.
It's ok to look at the ground as a woman, but if a man were to do that, he would be a terrible loser, I think. Maybe I'm picking up on how showing dominance is more of an important thing for men?
2) As expected, I feel some restrictions on my expression of my emotions. But I didn't expect it to feel like this.
Before having tried restraining my emotions and my feminine expression ther, I used to see "emotional restraint" as an annoying thing that men did that made them less fun to be around but also more reliable in crises. I was seeing it only from an outside perspective.
But if I imagine following the emotional restrictions I imagine men obey (and mind you, I'm not even able to pull this off--I'm just imagining this):
It feels like being half-dead or being on tranquilizers. I feel an inhibition against doing the little playful things I do as a woman. It's like being in a loose straitjacket.
I feel required to be more cynical, withholding, and cautious.
I wonder what men would feel like if they imagined have female's license to emote. My boyfriend has said that he imagines it's very fun to be me.
3) Moreover, there are higher expectations for what I say or write. I can't just say anything; it has to be a
Here begin some more effects that I did not expect:
4) I sense that I need to be slower. I need to move more slowly, speak more slowly, and hesitate before doing things. I feel like leaning back in my chair (legs spread, of course) instead of sitting on the edge of my chair (I am not actually doing any of these things; just imagining what I would be doing if I were a guy).
It hadn't occurred to me, but I suppose that talking quickly and being eager and spritely is typically a female thing (not to be enforcing gender norms here--I'm just observing my own gender norms).
5) This one was the most surprising to me, but among the most strong. I feel a strong command to do less.
Components include:
-Write fewer things.
-Do only one thing for my work. Don't have much work besides my work.
-Have only one interest.
-Be "devoted" to a career, such as devoted to law or medicine.
Some of this might be what I imagine any other person would do, not necessarily a man.
But if I were to assume that these differences came from my ideas about men and not about other people in general:
-Perhaps I think that each act that a man does is more meaningful, so a man does not have to do as many things. In contrast, no matter how much a woman does, it seems like never enough, so as a woman I keep doing things maniacally.
-Maybe it's that I notice that men seem more cautious and less sharing. Since much of what I do is sharing, perhaps I feel like I should do less if I were to be a man.
6) So let me imagine being a man but having other aspects of my personality still similar. I'll imagine being a man with a personality sort of like mine.
What I feel like doing differently:
-Be more writerly. I guess I think of a man who's into writing as more pushed toward being a fiction or creative nonfiction writer.
Maybe it's easier for a woman to be "sensitive" and into writing without feeling pigeonholed into being an emotions-based writer (like, say, Jonathan Franzen).
-Read more fiction, more poetry. Hm, it seems like my ideas for what a "sensitive" guy should do are far more stereotyped and extreme than my conception of what a "sensitive" woman should do. Once again, perhaps I imagine that women are more free to be sensitive without it defining them.

I has been working on the concept of the 'new' relationship paradigm for over twenty years now. But let's not get fooled: This workshop is not to find your "Prince' or 'Princess' (or Shaki/Shiva). The workshop is to clear out old thinking you have that may be outdated (excuse the pun), cut off old ties and 'chords' that are hooking you back to the past and enrich YOUR new paradigm of relationship that YOU are evolving.
And, from my experience, you will always get to your destination - with or without this seminar. It's just about the ease and speed you want to get there....
"Set your sails for your dream today as the harbour of circumstances has a way of deflecting great ideas to more barren lands if action is not taken quickly". TERRY ELSTON
We will challenge your old ways of being/thinking. Be prepared to come out of your comfort zone if your want to banish the TV chair for the real stage of life:
"When you entertain the mundane, don't expect any dancing partners apart from the empty stage of complacency". TERRY ELSTON
One of the reasons that you are not moving on to your ideal partners is the conflict between your ancestors chain of command (read unsaid rules and blood presuppositions) and your own, individual ideas of what you really want. Some of your thinking may be so weighed down by family ties, unacceptable beliefs and brainwashing via the media, that the impossibility keeps talking louder than the infinite realities that ARE possible.
MAIN AREAS WE WILL COVER:
* What do we mean when we say 'Relationship'?
* Getting out of our heads and into the playground of life!
* Love is an infinite set of possibilities - we will get you back to this notion
* When you say "I love you", are you already losing the presence of love?
* What do you really want?
* Men v Women, what's the difference?
HOW WILL WE DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES?
* H'oponopono; a process to clear out the invisible chords that connect old relationships
* "Find love for anyone" process
* Train your third eye
* Express your truth
* Meditate on the flavours you want in your life now
* Understanding the illusion of relationship to be free
* Sending a tonal message out for what you want
We have lots of amazing techniques, including working with intuitive insight, guided self inquiry meditation, psychological supported partner work, vortex healing, NLP and creative therapy; yet we are flexible and will do whatever necessary to facilitate your truth coming out and exorcising itself.
This won't be a feedback sandwich kind of time where we wrap you in cotton wool; more of a responsible space where we support your highest and give your lowest the space to breathe.
The day will be whole and complete in itself - Yet there will a chance for back up personal session after the course finishes.
WHERE IS IT?
It will be held at a great venue, in or around Brighton.
HOW MUCH?
The course costs only lb45
WHEN?
Saturday, 22nd March 2014
Enrol now if this is speaking to you. I am charging lb45 up to December 25th. After that, I may ask you to pay up to lb100. And if the group looks like getting too big I may go up to lb250. You get the idea, get on board now!

So often I have asked myself what are the rules when a friendship ends. How long do you try to keep the relationship going? How long do you make attempts to get together? When do you just throw in the towel and move on? Most importantly, how do you emotionally deal with someone that was important to you moving on out of your life.
I have read books on this, and scanned the Internet looking for solid advice to this problem. You know, I haven't found solid and consistent advice. There are many different schools of thought, that people offer: make a clean and pronounced break, or simply allow things to drift and do not say anything, or you can say something about the relationship when you two speak again. All of this advice is extremely conflicting and doesn't really allow for consistent advice.
Some of the best advice I found was it good to let friendships go when the cost of maintaining the relationship became to high. For example, if you are the one that always must arrange you two to get together, and it bothers you, you should let the friendship go. Or it may be something like you have to constantly keep each other in communication or the friendship will die, then you should let it go.
Other advice I have seen is when that person isn't there to support you in times of need it is time to put that friendship on the back burner. Friends should be there to support each other in time of need, and yet, when a person who was a friend may not be there for you during your important times of need, it may be time to let that person go.
I would like to say that it is time to let friendships go when you give more than you receive. I really feel relationships by nature, are often uneven, so that is a hard way to judge a relationship. Once in a relationships class I heard a good explanation for friendships, some friends were there for a lifetime, and others only for a season.

QUESTION 1My boyfriend got in a fight...and then he smoke now his head and stomach hurts really bad, WHat do i do?... He got in a fight, and they beat him really bad....he got hit in the head with a chain, and had a concustion i keep him alive by talking to him on the phone and keeping him awake. two days later and he smoked weed with his friends now he is complaining that his head and stomach hurts really bad....ANSWERS1) see http://tinyurl.com/health-solutions/I hope it will be helpful in resolving your probeml keep using answers.yahoo.com - "wert"2) Well, he's stupid. You can't heal stupidity.Tell him to go to a doctor. - "l'Cie"3) Go to a clinic or a hospital. He may have a head injury. - "Maggie N"4) Geez, what a horrible deadbeat. You should call 911 or take him to the emergency room, but keep in mind that they might be busy helping good people that are ill for reasons outside of their control. - "Deridovely"5) You should use aciphex, it is the best about it you can get information from here http://webmd58.notlong.com/AAiUOGa - "Montague"6) Well... he should have had his head checked in the first place. Secondly, it is illegal to smoke weed in this country at this time! - "Trenton"7) He is going to be dead if he doesn't change his behavior. He is going down the wrong road. He probably needs medical attention. Prepare to go to his funeral if he doesn't change. - "notyou311"8) well - ask him to see a doc immediately - before things worsen. why did he have to smoke weed now? his organs might have been damaged - and we dont know unless he goes for a checkup. make him visit the doc asap. he's being real stupid. - "happylovehealth"9) If your boyfriend received a concussion so severe that you kept him alive by keeping him awake for two days (which is what you should do...keep the patient awake). BUT... your biggest mistake was that you should have kept him alive long enough for the ambulance to get there and pick him up. I don't think smoking the marijuana has anything to do with his headache/stomach ache. I am concerned that it is the effects of the concussion and he may be in worse shape than you realize.I strongly suggest you get him to a HOSPITAL ASAP. - "Dianne M""QUESTION 2What causes coughing?... ANSWERS1) see http://tinyurl.com/health-solutions/I hope it will be helpful in resolving your probeml keep using answers.yahoo.com - "Hwh"2) often its a similar reason as why people sneeze. its the body trying to get rid of foreign substances to keep you healthy. - "Kristine"3) Really good weed...peace lady - "Sunshine"4) I would say irritation in your throat is a cause for it. If something needs to come out of your esophagus or pharynx or anywhere in the neck region, coughing is a natural way to expunge anything irritating you. I will provide a link to a scholarly answer. - "Zi"5) about it you can get information from here http://webmd61.notlong.com/AAHJuBm - "Montague""QUESTION 3Should I go to a doctor to check my moles?... Well ive noticed that i got like maybe like 10 moles in a day..And they keep appearing! Should I go to a docter to get it checked out?ANSWERS1) see http://tinyurl.com/health-solutions/I hope it will be helpful in resolving your probeml keep using answers.yahoo.com - "Hwh"2) Yeah. Its something that I think that is not normal. - "Everywhere but there"3) no - "Anna"4) Yes MOST definately. You need to do this ASAP. You should be concerned with the fact you get that amount per day, but if they are raised or have hair growing out them, you should REALLY be concerned. This is a sign of skin cancer and you should get it checked out IMMEDIATELY. good luck to you :) - "Krista K"5) You may have a problem with your melanocytes (cells that give color to your skin, hair). Go to a dermatologist. - "Meian""QUESTION 4Should I pop the blisters?... I walked for 5 hours today resulting in two horridly huge blisters on my heal which miraculously have not popped on their own yet. Should I pop them or should I just wait and see what happens?my shoes fit and i did wear socks. my skin is just very sensitiveANSWERS1) I have always heard not to pop them? - "Shannon"2) 1)wear socks from now on2)wear shoes that fit, so that they don't rub your frickin heal3)pop it, but DON'T peel it. It will burn like hell, and will be hella sore!4)peel it after about 4 days to a week after you popped it. it will be dry by then - "Super Flyy"3) You should not pop them. That watery blister over the top is there to protect the skin underneath. Once that blister is gone the raw flesh has no defense against infections. So leave it and it will pop on its own, and when it does, do not pull the skin off. Put a band-aid and neosporin over it. Hope this helped. - "k.ray"4) Hey there! Funny thing is that I recently burned myself while cooking, and had the same question. And after researching for quite a bit, here's my answer:If you feel like it will bother you during your daily activities and that it might accidentally pop, then you should definitely pop it. The reason for this is because if it happens to pop accidentally mid-day when it is not convenient for you to clean it, then you risk the high possibility of infection. However, if the blister is in a place where you think that it will not be bothered, ALWAYS keep it unpopped. The skin on top of the unpopped blister serves as a barrier against germs and infection. The blister will eventually heal itself by growing new skin under the blister, and the dead skin of the blister will go away.So if you decide to pop the blister manually, make sure you:1) poke only a small hole with a sterilized needle, and let the fluid drain slowly, but don't peel off the rest of the skin (it protects the new skin underneath from infections until it heals),2) clean the surroundings thoroughly,3) put on a thin layer of Neosporin or Bacitracin to prevent infections,4) cover it with a bandaid or non-stick gauze to prevent irritation.Hope this helped! - "lalalala""QUESTION 5how to cure strep/sore throat?... i woke up this morning with a little pain in my throat, then during the day it got worst, then i took some medicine and it stopped for about 10 mins. then got worst again, it's painful to swallow, take a deep breath, and yawn. i dont know if i have Pharyngitis(sore throat), or Streptococcal pharyngitis(strep throat)please help, i cant eat anything right nowfemale, 14yrz. oldANSWERS1) see http://tinyurl.com/health-solutions/I hope it will be helpful in resolving your probeml keep using answers.yahoo.com - "wert"2) Go to the doctor......Drink hot tea with lemon, take a spoonful of honey with lemon, eat some chicken soup and drink some Ginger Ale.Zicam will work too and Vitamin C. - "Bandy D"3) 1. Take a mild antibiotic like generic amoxicillin 3 x a day for 7 days.2. Gurgle bactidol 2 x a day.3. Take vit. C4. Drink cold water5. Rest your throat. Take a cough suppressant if you must. But don't overuse it because some contain opiods. 6. If you develop a weird sounding cough, and have difficulty breathing, go to the doctor. - "Meian""
