As previously reported in our 20/20 section on May 6th, Abubakar Shekau the Leader of the Boko Haram Islamic Extremist group, has struck again. Below are a few facts to keep you up to date on this ongoing mission to rescue the girls of Chibok and Warabe.

On April 15th, 2014 over 200 young women whom were students of the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School were kidnapped by the Boko Haram at gunpoint. They were boarded on buses to the deeply wooded areas of the Nigerian border shared by neighboring Chad and Cameroon.

EIGHT MORE GIRLS KIDNAPPED IN NIGERIA

According to reports from various news agencies including the BBC, over 40 girls bravely escaped.

As the story began to make headlines around the world, the hashtags known as #BringBackOurGirls and #234 became the moniker for the global outcry. In addition to condemnation by the United Nations and a pledge of assistance by President Obama and US Secretary of State John Kerry, celebrities such as Angelina Jolie are speaking out.

On May 3rd, 2014 hundreds of young women gathered in Union Square, New York City wearing head wraps and scarves to protest and show support for the 200+ students of the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School whom were taken.

Unfortunately, at least eight more girls have been reported kidnapped as of May 4, 2014 from the nearby village of Warabe.

Nigeria may be miles away, but girls are universal. Though our language and customs are different, we share a love of music, movies, makeup and dreams. These young women were attending school to further their education and become successful.

As the Nigerian military goes on a dangerous mission to Bring Back Our Girls, we hope and pray that the Boko Haram is brought to justice and more importantly, that every girl is returned safe and sound.
